  • The Turn of the Screw” by Henry James

Being one the early gothic literary works and ghost stories in the history of English literature, “The Turn of the Screw” (1898) by Henry James is listed on the top of any horror-themed reading list.

It tells the story of a young governess who takes care of a young boy and girl, Miles and Flora. The governess starts to see a strange man in different places. After many incidents, the governess makes sure that this strange man is a ghost and the children are aware of it.

The main plot of the novel has been adapted in many films, such as “The Turn of the Screw” in 1999 and 2009.

The story was also converted to other genres, such as ballet performances and TV films.

  • The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson

Being one of the finest ghost stories in the 20th century, the book is one of the most interesting Halloween reading list choices.

Investigating around the case of hill house’s ghosts, the main protagonist of the novel is called Doctor Montague, who seeks to prove the existence of supernatural creatures.

The book has been recreated into two feature films and a play.

  • The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe

There is no doubt that Poe’s uniquely dark writing is one of the main elements in Halloween.

“The Fall of the House of Usher” is a short story published in 1839, revolving around an unnamed narrator who visits his friend Usher. He later notices many strange occurrences in the house.

  • The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton” by Edith Wharton

This short story collection is one of the most interesting frightful meals. Wharton tries to conjure a New England ghost. She focuses on scary phenomena in Halloween, such as vampires, zombies and horrific events. 

The stories were published fragmentally in different magazines between 1893 and 1935.

The monster later started to take revenge on his creator’s family through many ruthless murders.

“Dracula” is signified as the prince of darkness in the Victorian Age literature. Written by Bram Stoker and published in 1897, the book revolves around many conventions of vampire fantasies.

  • Let the Right One In” by John Ajvide Lindqvist

A vampire fiction novel released in 2004 by the Swedish writer John Ajvide Lindqvist, the book shows the relation between a 12-year-old boy and a several-centuries old vampire.

The book was one of the best sellers in Sweden, and it is translated into seven languages. In 2008, the novel was adapted to film.

  • Song of Kali” by Dan Simmons

Released in 1985, it traces the journey of an American intellect who travels to India and suddenly becomes a part of horrific events in the center of the cult of Kali.
