Star-studded ‘social themed’ 10th MIFF at PACA auditorium and VOX Cinemas from March 26 to 31

MUSCAT - Italian action hero Franco Nero, Nepali Bollywood star Manisha Koirala, Indian–American award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair, Egyptian Hollywood actor Amr Waked, Syrian actor and filmmaker Ghassan Masoud, veteran Egyptian director Ali Badrakhan and a cluster of select movie stars and filmmakers from almost every corner of the world will descend into Oman in a matter of weeks.

The spotlight shifts to Oman as the nation prepares to celebrate the 10th Muscat International Film Festival (MIFF), which will be held at the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) auditorium in Seeb.

All roads lead to PACA and VOX cinemas

In fact, all roads lead to the PACA auditorium in Seeb for the festival-related activities and theme evenings as well as the VOX cinemas in Muscat where cine goers and film buffs alike get their heart-filled entertainment dose of exciting movies.

These films, which will be screened as part of the10th MIFF, will feature a total of 115 (105 in competition and 10 out-of-competition)movies.

Path-breaking venture

The 10th MIFF makes a path-breaking venture this time by two dedicating two days – March 28 and 30 -- for relevant social themes, which includes celebrating women power and focusing on children’s rights.

Film industry to get boost

As the events unfolds over the course of six days from March 26 to 31, in a swirl of excitement, glitz, glamour and also with social themes, Oman’s nascent film industry will also get a much-deserved boost as it shares the spotlight, noted Mohammed Al Kindi, president, Oman Film Society (OFS) and MIFF. They and some of the key sponsors and supporters of this exciting festival announced salient details of the MIFF to the members of the press at a press conference held at the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), yesterday.

Colourful highlight 

Organised by the OFS, under the auspices of the Ministry of Social Development, the film festival has become a colourful highlight in the Sultanate’s cultural calendar with a multi-cultural audience, local, regional and international celebrities, top officials and movie aficionados

Presented by Tourism Ministry in association with Oman Airports

The 10th MIFF is being presented by the Ministry of Tourism in association with the Oman Airports.  The VOX Cinemas is the venue partner, Merge and Al Wisal are the radio partners. The hospitality partners are Hormuz Grand Hotel and Mysk by Shaza.

10 on 10

Being the 10th MIFF, the number 10 figures like a recurring motif across all the events on all six days. This includes its 10year history, 10 top short films, 10 celebrities being honoured, and 10 artistes, both international and Omanis.

Opening and closing ceremonies

The opening and closing ceremonies on March 26 and 31 will feature red carpet events, with a galaxy of stars, luminaries and intellectuals from the world of cinema. The remaining four days have an equally exciting line-up of programmes.  The opening and closing night ceremonies will dazzle with a heady mix of regional and international stars, global artistes and local Oman talent, including the likes of  Swedish-Lebanese singer Maher Zain, Grammy award-winning Japanese flautist Kitaro, world-whistling champion Dutchman Geert Chatrou, Danish-Palestinian percussionist Simona Abdallah, Russian Jaw harpist Olga Uutai, India’s only woman saxophonist S Lavanya and Oman’s well-known Munshid singers Watasimu, popular singer Haitham Mohammed Rafi and talented Oud artist Ziyad Harbi and band.

Salim Bahwan tribute

The MIFF will pay special tribute to pioneering Omani actor and film-maker Salim Bahwan, who expired in 2017. A consummate actor and dedicated film-maker, Salim Bahwan was at the vanguard of activities to carry forward the fledgling cinema industry here in Oman

Short films 

March 27 will be the dedicated day for short films.   A wide range of local and international films will be screened under the Panorama Section for the public. Among them will be the short film classic A Trip to the Moon (French: Le Voyage dans la Lune), a 1902 French silent film directed by Georges Méliès.

Celebrating women

Wow Woman, a celebration of women power on March 28, will be an exclusively women-centric day with the special screening of Girl Rising documentary on education for girls. This film follows nine girls from Haiti, Nepal, Ethiopia, India, Egypt, Peru, Cambodia, Sierra Leone, and Afghanistan on their journey. The celebration of women goes further. Hollywood director Mira Nair, who will be the guest of honour at the event, will speak on the occasion. Her film Queen of Katwe will be screened at the VOX Cinemas.

Premiere of Dear Maya 

March 29 will see the international premiere of Dear Maya starring Bollywood star Manisha Koirala at the VOX Cinemas. Both Koirala and the film’s director Sunaina Bhatnagar will be present.

Escape to Victory screening in the presence of Osvaldo Ardiles

Escape to Victory, the 1981 British-American film about allied prisoners of war who are interned in a German prison camp during the Second World War, will also be screened at the Vox Cinemas. One of the actors in the movie, who was also aprofessional footballer, ‘Ossie’ Osvaldo Ardiles, will be present at the screening on March 29th.

Live like a Child

A special day for kids, Live Like A Child, will be held at PACA on March 30. Internationally renowned children rights’ activist Craig Kielburger will be the guest of honour for that day’s programme. A special screening of It Takes A Child documentary, taken by Kielburger, will be a highlight at the PACA auditorium. Another children’s movie from Tunisia, Zainab Hates Snow, will also be featued at the PACA, while a Hindi movie Pihu, directed by reputed Indian journalist Vinod Kapri, will be screened at theVOX. Kapri will also be present at the screening.

Closing ceremony 

The grand finale and the closing awards night will be on March 31. The MIFF will officially recognize the contributions made to world film industry by the honouring an array of  film personalities including Dr Abdel Haq Al-Muntarsh, Manisha Koirala, Ghassan Massoud, Ali Badrakhan, Dawood Hussain, Franco Nero, Mira Nair, Dariush Mehrjui,  Fakhriya bint Khamis Al Ajmi, Amr Waked, Zahra Arafat, Bossi Shalaby and Ateeqa Atrash.
